09/03/20 – Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Important information and reassurance for learners

First on Scene FAQ & Support ECLAS
9th March 2020 It is SAFE to attend first aid training: Due to media coverage of the COVID-19 virus we note that some clients are concerned about the safety of attending first aid training. The Health and Safety Executive and Consultant Microbiologists from NHS England have now provided advice specifically for first aid training. Potential spread of the virus can be prevented by very simple hygiene steps in the classroom and it is SAFE to attend training - indeed, with the strict procedures we have implemented it is likely to be safer than coming into the office! All of First on Scene’s trainers are UK Emergency Service trained in infection prevention and control and will be overseeing these controls in the classroom. Learners can be reassured that hospital level infection control is in place in the classroom. How we are protecting learners in the classroom: 1. On arrival the trainer will ensure all learners are not exhibiting signs of respiratory infection and learners will be asked to sanitise hands. Anyone exhibiting signs of respiratory infection (e.g. cough/cold/flu, particularly if it makes the person sneeze, cough or need to blow their nose) will be asked to self-exclude from the course. Anyone excluded from the course will be offered one opportunity to re-book within a three-month period or you can send an alternative learner on the course* 2. Class induction: on arrival all learners will be given clear instructions in following World Health Organisation advice on infection prevention and control. This simple and easy to follow advice is clinically proven and very effective and adherence will be monitored by the trainer throughout the course. 3. Adherence to hygiene advice will be monitored by the trainer throughout the course. Frequent hand washing and use of alcohol wipes/hand sanitizer gel will be required throughout the course. Nitrile gloves will also be available if needed. Hand washing facilities and alcohol hand sanitizer/wipes will be on hand at all times. 4. As you would expect, manikin hygiene has always been of utmost priority in first aid training. CPR manikins are already designed to completely protect against spread of infection including all previously known types of coronavirus (cold/flu/SARS/MERS/Swine-flu ). Current precautions alone have been deemed safe by the HSE and NHS England Microbiologists. For added reassurance however we are providing double failsafe protection by also issuing personal CPR face shields. In line with the above - where learners are exhibiting symptoms typical of fever, flu, cough, cold, or have been in close contact with someone who has the Covid-19 infection then they should self-exclude from the course*. Please call us if the above applies. * the following amendment to paragraph 7 of our standard terms and conditions will apply until 30th July 2020: learners who are advised by HM Government to self-isolate at https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-response (or who are excluded from the course on the day) will be offered one place on an alternative course within a three month period of the original booking. Alternatively the Customer may send an alternative delegate to attend the course.  The customer must still notify FOST in writing to amend or cancel any booking. If a delegate does not attend a course without giving prior notice in writing, the full course fee shall remain payable and no refund shall be given.
