When a pupil at Leeds West Academy collapsed on the football pitch last month, staff members were quick to respond following their first aid training with First on Scene.
The first aiders used the skills they had learned from their course to confidently and calmly administer CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) until the emergency services arrived.
The UK survival rate from cardiac arrest is only 6%, but a First Aider giving effective CPR and a defibrillator shock within 3 minutes, can increase this to a massive 74%.
The speedy action of these first aiders ensured that the pupil stood the best possible chance of survival. He is now expected to make a full recovery. “The great ending to this story evidences how essential First Aid is in our lives, and how imperative AEDs are within our communities, to promote, preserve and protect the lives of us all.”
Leeds West Academy Principal, Nick Hinchliffe said. “I would like to thank all of our staff who responded promptly at the scene. The professionalism, care and calmness of all involved was absolutely outstanding.”
We hope that none of our First Aiders have to face a real life emergency, but when they do, we equip them to take control and react with confidence.
