Only first aiders who have a 'First Aid at Work' certificate that has not expired by more than 28 days, can attend a '2 Day First Aid at Work Requalifying' Course.
First aiders can attend this requalification course up to 3 months before (or a maximum of 28 days after) the expiry date of their current 'First Aid at Work' certificate. In all cases the new certificate will be valid for 3 years from the expiry date of the old certificate.
If a certificate has expired by more than 28 days and you wish regain the qualification, the Health and Safety Executive require the initial (3 day) 'First Aid at Work' course to be taken again.
If you hold an 'Appointed Persons' certificate, it should be noted that from the 1st Oct 2009 this course has been replaced by the new HSE approved Emergency First Aid at Work Course (1 Day).
We advise all employers to review their first aid needs assessment using the HSE’s new guidance to ensure the most appropriate training option is selected – A comprehensive guide to the new changes is available to download using the link below:
HSE First Aid Needs Assessment - From Oct 2009
If you hold an Paediatric First Aid (to Ofsted requirements) certificate, you should re-attend a 2 Day Paediatric First Aid course before the certificate expires.
Due to the wealth of evidence on the severity of ‘first aid skill fade’, from Oct 2009, the HSE now recommend that First Aiders and Emergency First Aiders attend annual refresher training. The flow chart below shows the HSE’s recommended sequence of training.
Annual Refresher Training is also intended to speed up the introduction of new first aid guidelines that are based on the latest medical studies. New international first aid guidelines will be released in Oct 2010 and they will be implemented by training providers as quickly as possible after they are announced.

The HSE now recommend that all First Aiders attend this short course annually.
