This course leads to a nationally recognised teaching qualification (PTLLS) and is tailored to meet the needs of anyone wanting to become a first aid instructor. The course combines the practical and theoretical elements required for the PTLLS qualification with specific focus on the effective delivery of first aid training.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) is now the minimum requirement for instructors delivering training to adults in colleges or in any situation where a course attracts public funding. A number of recognised awarding bodies now use PTLLS as a minimum instructor standard for delivering their qualifications.
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
Accredited by Edexcel. This level 3 or 4 award is a six credit qualification on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and is equivalent to City and Guilds 7303.
The First Aid Instructor/Assessor Certificate
Accredited by First on Scene (HSE approval 01/01)
All delegates should hold a current First Aid at Work Certificate unless they are a registered paramedic, nurse or doctor. Potential first aid instructors will also need to have reasonable literacy skills i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks and to write answers in a legible and understandable form.
Our 5 day First Aid Instructor course combines theoretical first aid knowledge and practical teaching sessions, which help to develop the delegates’ ability and confidence. The course helps students understand how teaching methods affect learning and builds on their current experience.
During the course, students will be expected to deliver a number of micro teaching sessions. The subjects of the teaching sessions will be agreed at the start of the course, to allow a sufficient amount of preparation time.
On completion of the course students will be able to:
The course consists of 36 hours contact teaching time, with an additional 30 hours of self-directed study.
To provide learners with sufficient time and the maximum amount of support for this home study element, we have specifically designed a split course that runs over two weeks.
A portfolio of work and evidence of practical first aid teaching skills will be assessed on completion. If the required standard is achieved an Edexcel Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) and a First Aid Instructor/Assessor certificate will be awarded.
Once you have gained your PTLLS award, you are qualified to start teaching appropriate publicly funded courses in colleges, adult and community learning environments or for work-based learning organisations.
The PTLLS qualification can be used as credits towards the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).
