First Aid Requalification Information

First Aid at Work Certificates:

Those holding a First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate may attend a shorter 2 day Requalification course. Whilst this course shares the same assessment criteria as the 3 day initial course, its content is covered in a significantly shorter timeframe.

To reduce the chance of learners failing to gain their qualification, the HSE recommends it is “prudent” to complete a 3 day course if the previous FAW certificate has expired by more than 1 month.

It should also be noted that once a person’s FAW certificate has expired, they can no longer be counted as a designated first aider in the workplace.

Emergency First Aid at Work Certificates:

First Aiders holding an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate should re-attend a 1 day Emergency First Aid at Work course to requalify.

Annual Refresher Training:

The Resuscitation Council UK and the HSE recommend that first aiders should receive annual refresher training due to the wealth of evidence on the severity of first aid skill fade.

The HSE states that employers “should ensure” that all qualified first aiders “remain competent to perform their role”.

The flow chart on the right shows the HSE’s recommended sequence of training.

Paediatric First Aid Certificates:

Those holding a Paediatric First Aid certificate should requalify by attending a 2 day Paediatric First Aid course or a 3 day combined First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid course.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid Certificates:

First Aiders holding an Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate should re-attend a 1 day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course to requalify.
